Pathways Travels Black History & Culture tour provides students with opportunities to travel across the United States to learn about the history of civil rights and current work and contributions of the Black/African American community and other groups that have been denied civil rights throughout American history.

Group Activities

Program Includes

• Round -Trip Transportation

Ground transportation—covered. We take care of getting you around so you can enjoy the experience. All transportation during the duration of the program is included.

• Lodging Accommodations

Accommodations will be at 3-4 star hotels or conference centers. Lodging will always be a place that provides a safe and comfortable setting for students.

• Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Served Daily

We provide three meals a day, every day (including travel day meals sent with participants). With advanced notice, we can accommodate special dietary restrictions and allergies.

• 24/7 Program Facilitator

Our Program Facilitator is a highly qualified trip leader who facilitates all aspects of the trip for our students, chaperones, and staff. They provide supervision, support, and all the social emotional facilitation within the program.

• Full-Time Experiential Learning Educators

In addition to the Program Facilitator, each trip will be equipped with a team of our Experiential Learning Educators (ELEs). Our ELEs are highly trained educators who are responsible for supporting the Program Facilitator and tour guides. All ELEs are trained in CPR/First Aid and all emergency trip protocol.

• Guided Tours & Activities

All activities throughout the duration of the program are included on our trips. This includes guided tours and activities supervised by Pathways staff.

• Social Emotional & Experiential Programming

Pathways staff creates and facilitates all social emotional and experiential programming including group activities, ice breakers, and trip activities. Our staff are also trained to provide exceptional support for students on their emotional well-being (i.e. ease culture shock, mediate conflict, etc)

• Overnight Security Chaperone

The Pathways team provides supervision DAY & NIGHT, including being on-call for emergencies.

• Academic Credit & Support

Pathways programs are unique such that we can provide academic/elective credit to students. Pathways staff will tutor students throughout the trip on the provided curriculum and support with grading.

• Pre-trip Orientation

We provide a dedicated Program Liaison to host pre-trip orientation/parent information night (including make up orientations), assist with gathering the necessary paperwork, and to liaison with school/students/parents to ensure that all pre-trip logistics are fulfilled.

• Will our students be safe and secure?

Pathways has been a trusted and proven operator of international & domestic multi-day trips for teenagers since 2007. Students are accompanied by adult chaperones and Pathways employees, never exceeding an 10:1 ratio of adults to students. All participants are provided preparation guidelines and are required to follow strict policies that ensure appropriate and safe behavior. We always put safety first!

• How many students are welcome on each trip?

Some programs are flexible, but general guideline for maximum program capacity ranges from 20-40.

• What ages are welcome?

Programs are open to students ages 13-20.

If a student is 18 or older, they do not need a parent/guardian signature. However, we recommend that parents accompany their student to program orientation.

• What is your policy on student misbehavior?

We take safety very seriously, and we do not allow behavior that could potentially endanger participants or staff. Furthermore, we require all staff and participants to use appropriate language and treat one another respectfully. We uphold a zero tolerance policy for possession or participation in any of the below:

  • Verbal/Physical abuse of any kind
  • Smoking (including possession of lighters, matches, tobacco products or paraphernalia)
  • Possession, use, or sale of alcohol or any controlled substances or drugs not prescribed by the participant’s personal physician
  • Vandalism/Theft of any property
  • Being in the opposite gender’s living area or bathroom
  • Sexual behavior
  • Possession of a firearm, knife, or weapon of any kind, unless provided by program staff and used in strict accordance with program activity

• What documents or materials are needed from students to qualify for program participation?

Along with a completed intake packet (provided by a Pathways representative, the following materials must be turned in before participants can be approved for a trip:

  • Copy of health insurance card (front and back)
  • Copy of student’s ID
  • Under 18 – school ID
  • 18 or older – state issued ID
  • Passports/Visas (International Trips)

If a student will be taking any prescription medication while on the trip, his or her personal physician will need to complete an additional form.

• How does weather affect program activities?

Snow, rain, heat, and gloom generally don’t prevent Pathways participants from having fun and learning! In the case of severe weather conditions, Pathways reserves the right to cancel a program for safety concerns. Pathways will work with all clients to ensure customer satisfaction to the best of our ability should a cancellation/rescheduling be deemed necessary.

• How do you handle dietary restrictions, medication, and health issues?

All restrictions, medications, health and behavioral issues must be stated clearly in the participants intake form.

All Pathways medication procedures will be reviewed at student/parent orientations. Pathways will work with school chaperones to ensure all participants health needs are fully met to the best of our ability within our scope of practice.

All dietary restrictions are taken seriously and accounted for when designing meals for our participants. Pathways frequently services students who are vegetarian, kosher, gluten-free, or suffer from various food allergies.

• Is there a suggested packing list?

During the first orientation for each trip, a suggested packing list will be provided. Depending on the trip and time of year, these items will vary. In general:
