Why Virtual Programs are Beneficial for Student Growth & Learning in the Digital Space
Virtual programs are changing the online education space, especially extracurriculars. With schools slowly entering into the classroom, there is still a gap between student and teacher comfortability back in physical school. How can we keep students engaged online in the meantime? At Pathways Travels, we have curated different virtual programs to provide a fun, educational, and exceptional experience for students. From virtual cooking classes to college tours, our students have learned new social-emotional skills, developed new interests, and increased engagement in their classes.
Why are these programs increasing engagement and helping the new educational landscape? Here are three reasons why virtual programs are beneficial for any school:
- Hands-on learning in the online space
At Pathways Travels, our virtual programs include a supply box catered for each class and lesson. Materials are provided for each student including workbooks, lab supplies, and activity kits. Learning and doing work on the computer for hours at a time can be incredibly draining. Not only is it an ineffective way to teach remotely, it also negates the variety of student learning styles such as kinesthetic learners.
- Small groups help with stronger engagement
Classroom management looks different on Zoom, but having a smaller class can have its advantages. On a smaller scale, teachers are better able to address student needs quicker and easier. Combining physical supplies and small group discussions, our virtual programs have generated student engagement up to nearly 100%.
It’s important to provide a safe space to learn and share opinions, ideas, etc. Small groups and breakout sessions have helped students feel more comfortable sharing thoughts and ideas, making brainstorming sessions more effective and feasible.
- Inspire students to engage in the real world (as best and safely for current circumstances)
Providing unique classes such as Crime Scene Investigation or International Cooking have brought many new career ideas and inspiration to our students. Education must shift to meet the needs of current students and prepare them for their future. Providing non-traditional classes are great examples of extracurricular activities students can get involved in without having to leave the house.
What I liked most about this program was that we were able to meet new people and I was confident about making stuff in this class. I liked that I made stuff and learned new ingredients about things that I never even knew existed.
